The Senate of Khyber Medical University (KMU) Peshawar unanimously approved a surplus budget of Rs. 279.976 million. The approval was granted during the 19th Senate meeting held at Alexander Fleming Hall, KMU, under the chairmanship of Pro-Chancellor and Advisor to the Chief Minister on Health, Mr. Ihtisham Ali. The meeting was attended by KMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zia ul Haq, former Supreme Court Judge Justice (R) Mian Muhammad Ajmal, former Additional IG Police Akhtar Ali Shah, and other members.

Briefing the Senate, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zia ul Haq said that KMU was established 18 years ago with very limited resources, but today it has grown into a strong and flourishing institution with over 200 affiliated colleges in the fields of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Rehabilitation, Public Health, Basic Medical Sciences, Pharmacy, and Allied Health Sciences, and more than 75,000 students. He added that with sub-campuses in major districts of the province and the establishment of the Islamabad campus, KMU has already attained national recognition, while upcoming international campuses in Kabul and Saudi Arabia will elevate it to the global level.

He further informed that KMU’s research grant has reached Rs. 2 billion, while in the Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) ranking, KMU’s Quality Enhancement Cell stood at the top with a 95% score. He said that the successful diagnostic services provided by the Public Health Reference Lab (PHRL) will soon be expanded commercially across the province. KMU is also the first medical university in the province to establish a 500-bed general hospital, which will soon be inaugurated by the Chief Minister.

The Vice Chancellor added that due to strict implementation of the financial austerity policy and conversion of pension and GP Fund into the Contributory Provident Fund (CP Fund), the university has once again been able to present a surplus budget.

Speaking on the occasion, Health Advisor Ihtisham Ali praised KMU’s performance and financial management, stating that at a time when most universities in the province are facing financial deficits, KMU’s presentation of a surplus budget is a commendable and exemplary achievement. He said that the determination of vision and goals, and the struggle for their achievement, reflect KMU’s commitment and hard work, which is indeed praiseworthy and a matter of pride.

He assured the Senate that the provincial government and the Health Department will provide all necessary facilities to KMU on a priority basis, enabling the only medical university of the province to achieve its mission and vision more effectively.

Earlier, the Senate approved the budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 with an income of Rs. 5077.325 million and expenditures of Rs. 4797.349 million, reflecting a surplus of Rs. 279.976 million. The Senate also unanimously approved the revised budget of the fiscal year 2024-25, which showed an income of Rs. 4907.126 million and expenditures of Rs. 4186.748 million, with a surplus of Rs. 720.378 million. On this occasion, Health Advisor Ihtisham Ali also inaugurated the newly established Student Facilitation Center at KMU.
