KMU 34th Academic Council Approves Major Academic and Policy Reforms

The 34th meeting of Academic Council of Khyber Medical University (KMU), Peshawar, was held under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zia ul Haq on 24-01-2026. The council approved the minutes of 33rd Academic Council meeting and made several significant decisions to enhance academic policies and programs.

During the meeting, minutes of 44th & 45th Equivalence Committee meeting along with five Relevance Assessment Committee Minutes were approved. Students were facing issue in migration from other Universities and Private Institutes to KMU and vice versa. The existing Migration Policy was revised to cater the student issues. Furthermore, the council also approved two Ethics courses for non Muslim students in place of Fehm ul Quran course.

As a requirement of HEC policy the council approved extension in degree duration of more than 160 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Additionally, some revised PhD courses and 10 new degree, diploma and certificate programs were approved. The council also sanctioned Institutional Graduate Entrance Test (I-GET) for PhD in Biochemistry program and revised curriculum for Pharmacy degree. Approval was given for Institutional Board of Studies, Graduate Studies Committee and Institutional Ethic Committee for IPDM.

A list of 22 external reviewers was approved by council for MS and PhD in Physical Therapy program. The council also made a ground breaking decision by changing the name of “Institute of Paramedical Sciences” (IPMS) to “Institute of Allied Health Sciences” (IAHS). Approval was given for revised rules for visiting faculty appointments in light of Higher Education Commission rules. Furthermore, MS Nursing was split into two tracks: Critical Care MSN and MSN Education. The council also approved integration of Nutrition curriculum in MBBS and BDS.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zia ul Haq highlighted the significance of Academic Council as a vital forum for addressing academic and administrative issues. He praised the council's contributions to launching new programs and maintaining the quality of existing ones. He expressed confidence that council members would continue guiding the university through innovative recommendations and decisions, helping KMU achieve its vision of becoming a premier institution in the region.
